
We have all experienced pain, whether from DOMS (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness) or general pain but when that pain becomes a regular occurence that never seems to improve or go away or in fact is here to stay, that is probably the point at which I end up meeting my clients.
Unfortunately, in our society the attitude is very much, unless you're in long term pain, just deal with it...oh and even if you are in long term pain, we'll give you some medication for it!
If society could change that view to "Prevention is better than Cure" then many more of us would be taking better care of ourselves and I don't mean caning it at the gym or going for marathon runs but actually working with our body and how it can then best provide and take care of us.

For many of us joint and muscle pain is quite often from overdoing (over extending, hyper-mobilising) the movement within the joint or (excessive flexion/extension) muscle or placing the joint or muscles under excessive pressure. Of course there are exceptions; poor bone density (osteopenia) leading to osteoarthritis, reduced muscle as we age, worn cartilage, Gaucher disease , Fibromyalgia, amongst many others.
However, in nearly all cases by implementing a healthy (read that as, not excessive!) regular routine of exercise combining a variety of activities earlier rather than later in life, can seriously improve and reduce your chances of having more serious issues later on.....BUT I am guessing most us are in the latter category...so what can we do to feel a little less creaky, sore and a lot more flexible and stronger?
A combination of training combining cardiovascular activity such as walking or swimming, a progressive weight training programme:
"In 2005, British researchers evaluated 13 randomized clinical trials that compared walking, muscle-strengthening exercises, and conventional therapy without exercise in patients with osteoarthritis of the knee. Both walking and muscle-strengthening were safe and effective, reducing pain and disability. And in 2006 and 2007, scientists in the Netherlands and the U.K. reported that graded exercise programs are safe and effective for patients with arthritis of the hip or knee."
and introducing a flexibility routine such as yoga can help to prevent, improve and strengthen your joints as well as release tension in your muscles and for those going for the gains, this is a must!

In fact, some studies show that yoga, which has its roots in ancient India, can reduce arthritis-related pain, improve joint function, build strength and promote relaxation. “It’s low impact,” says Janice Kiecolt-Glaser, PhD, a professor at The Ohio State University in Columbus who conducted research on possible physical benefits of yoga. “It has a lot of potential benefits. Doing [yoga] every day would be wonderful, but even a couple of times a week is helpful.”
